Don’t Smile

It takes sixty-four muscles of the face to make a frown, and only thirteen to make a smile. Why work overtime? – Old saying

The best way to wake up with a smile on your face is to go to bed with one already there. – Richard C. Miller

Smiling is the second best thing you can do with your mouth. – Bumper sticker
If you’re trying to be miserable, don’t smile. Some people are smiling on the inside, but they forget to tell their face. A clever bumper sticker says, “Put a smile on your kisser, and someone may put a kiss on your smiler.” (I think I’ll put that on the bathroom mirror and see if my wife gets the hint.) I read in the paper that it’s a psychological fact that smiling on the outside makes you feel better on the inside (if it’s in the paper, it must be true). People who are happy walk with their shoulders back and their heads up. If you want to be miserable, slump your shoulders, look at the ground, go to your unhappy place, and whatever you do, don’t smile.

Don’t Sing

I know only two tunes: One of them is “Yankee Doodle” and the other isn’t. – Ulysses S. Grant

There is no music in hell, for all good music belongs to heaven. – Brigham Young

Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains; for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. – Isaiah 49:13, Old Testament
Aria hungry? Let’s eat overture place. Sonata bad idea. There’s something about singing a song that makes you happy. If happy people have sunshine in their souls, then miserable people must have a black hole in theirs (and people who read a lot of self-help books must have chicken soup in their souls). Have you ever seen a depressed person sing? Miserable people sing the blues, while happy people sing “Blue Skies Shinin’ on Me.” Happy people sing in the shower, sing in the car, even whistle while they work. Happy people sing “Zip-a-dee doo dah!” while the miserable zip-padee up their mouths.

Dinner and a Movie

Doug and I met my mom for dinner at Sizzler before The Wizard of Oz. It was nice to sit down and chat. We were trying to figure out the last time my mom saw a movie in the theaters. We thought of a couple - The Nightmare Before Christmas and she saw a Nascar film at the IMAX. Other than that it was a couple drive in movies. I just remembered we saw Hot Shots Part Deux at the drive in.

The Wizard of Oz started with behind the scenes clips, which was really interesting until the screen went black and then the sound shut off a couple minutes later. Fun fact: Shirley Temple was the first pick for the role of Dorothy, but they didn't think her voice could live up to the role. And Judy Garland's name was Frances Ethel Gumm before she changed it.

THEN, during the movie, picture the scene above, or any other moment you can remember. Imagine a red, glowing moon filling the middle of the screen and then **FLASH** light would fill the room. Yep, some idiot was taking photos of the movie! WHAT THE!!!!??????? Really, the movie has been out for 70 years and you are TAKING PHOTOS OF IT??? Go online and run a search for Wizard of Oz, you can have ANY PHOTO YOU WANT.

Then the glowing phones would come out... people texting, taking photos of the screen, etc. I just didn't understand it and still don't. I just can't believe people would be so inconsiderate of ALL the other people who paid to see the movie too. You can't ignore your phone for the duration of a movie? Sheesh.

Besides that stuff, it was fun to see the movie that large. I would see little things I hadn't noticed before. Like the supposed "hanging scene". There was a crane in that scene that works it's way to the back of the set and it appears to flap it's wings, which has been rumored to be a hanging munchkin. After looking up articles about the "hanging", apparently MGM wanted the other side of the rainbow to look more exotic, so they let birds from the LA Zoo run around the set (including peacocks and turkeys). I didn't notice the peacocks or turkeys, but apparently you can see them when Dorothy is meeting everyone.

I also heard a few silly lines I didn't notice before:

"Trapped like mice. Rats!" (says the Lion when they are in the castle) and "Look its ticking" (as the Tin Man holds the ticking heart to every one's ears).

New Faucet

After a 10 hour battle, spread out over 3 days, we have a new faucet! I haven't used it yet, so I'll have to let you know how I like it later on my review blog. First, Doug had trouble getting the broken one off, then the new hoses were threaded and the old set was a snap-on type. Then the adapter didn't work. After talking to a man at Lowe's, we solved the mystery. We had to buy new water supply lines. Sounds pretty pricey huh? Nah, about $7 each. Not bad at all. My husband is so patient! I would have shoved the whole island out the back door (somehow) and brought a hose in to use. I'm so thankful to have a handy hubby! I'm also thankful to the sales folks at Lowe's. They have been great EVERY TIME we've been in there.

I'm not quite sure why this picture is so dark, I had the flash on. Our new faucet is much higher so we don't have to worry about moving it out of the way on the left side because the sink is more shallow.

Wizard of Oz

If you live in the Sacramento area, The Wizard of Oz is being released in theaters for ONE evening. This Wednesday at 7pm in Century theaters. I've already got my tickets! Doug and I have a date with my mom - we're doing dinner and a movie. I think it's been many, many, many years since my mom has been to a movie in the theater and I'm really excited to take her to her ALL time favorite. She tried to play it cool and said she'd think about it, but I knew she would go. Sure enough, as soon as she got home and mentioned it to my step-dad she called and told me to get the tickets. I can't wait - I love The Wizard of Oz!!

Avoid Good Company

I'm anxious to finish this book and we only have 12 (after today) to go!! Sooo...you get THREE today!

Instead of waiting for someone to take you under their wing, go out there and find a good wing to climb under. – Dave Thomas A friend is someone who makes it easier for you to reach your fullest potential. Happy people build, lift, encourage, and motivate, and being in their company always make you want to be better too. People who are trying to be miserable try to find friends who weigh them down with gloom and doubt. Misery loves this kind of company. Bad company will try to take you to places you shouldn’t be and tempt you to do things you shouldn’t do. Then, after you’ve followed their plan of misery, you feel empty inside, and you wonder why you’re miserable! Well, perhaps bad feelings accompany bad company.

Postpone Prayer

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find it; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. – Matthew 7:7, New Testament

Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks. – Phillips Brooks
The happiest people pray early and often, while the miserable often postpone prayer to be used only as a last resort. Happy people keep in touch; miserable people keep their distance until the crisis is on. A teenage girl once said, “Prayer is so easy to stop and so hard to start again – but operators are standing by.” In prayer we are never alone, because God plus one other person is a majority, and “if God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31, New Testament). Sometimes just knowing the Lord is there and watching over us is a great remedy for misery. Happy people stand tallest when they’re on their knees, but the miserable haven’t got a prayer.

Don’t Learn Anything New

Man’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions. – Oliver Wendell Holmes

Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge, other just gargle. – Robert Newton Anthony
Happy people love to learn. Miserable people think learning is just too much work. Happy people love getting up in the morning knowing that in the day ahead, they will learn many new things they didn’t know when they got up. Happy people are interested, inspiring, and inquisitive. They’re also intelligent, because when you ask a lot of questions of others, you’re bound to learn something yourself. Miserable people would rather lounge than learn. They use their drive time to tune in to trash, while the happy turn their cars into classrooms. The miserable read only what they have to for the test, and they’d rather take naps than take notes.

Link - not showing updated

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but the product blog link shows up as being updated a week ago when I just did it a couple days ago (and I tried one just now)....I'm confused.

People are Crazy

I almost forgot to share my drama from Friday! At lunch a few of us heading to Kmart; when we got out of the car I heard a dog whining and high pitch barking. (Sacramento was 100 degrees on Friday). I said to Christina that I couldn’t see if a dog was locked in someone’s car or which car it was coming from. We got closer to the store and the dog was still whining and barking. I looked back and saw a nose stick out of an SUV. I told the gals I would meet them inside and walked back to the SUV. The dog was panting pretty heavily; I couldn’t believe some idiot left their dog in the car on that hot of a day. I opened my phone to call the police and some guy about 10 cars away started yelling at me that it’s too hot to lock a dog in the car. I kept yelling back to him that it wasn’t my car or my dog and I was calling the police to get the dog out. As I finish yelling to the guy the dispatcher answered and I reported the vehicle make, model and location and let them know the dog was whining and panting heavily. The dispatcher said they would send someone right out. As I began to walk to the store, an older couple was walking towards me. I paused to see which car they are walking to, but they seem to be walking to a different car. NOPE, I hear the *beep beep* of the Toyota disarming. I walked to the rear of the vehicle where the older man was loading his purchase and the older woman got in the front seat. Here is the conversation that took place – we will now be referring to the old man as “Jerk”:

Me: I called the police because you left your dog locked in the car on a 100 degree day.

Jerk: What?! *pointing at the windows that are cracked* The windows are cracked!

Me: That doesn’t matter; do you know how hot it gets in there??

Jerk: You’re an idiot!!

Me: Why don’t you lock yourself in there for a while and let me know how you like it!

Jerk: We were only in there for 5 minutes! (Which I KNOW it was much longer than that.)

Me: Well, you need to lock yourself in the car, and then you’ll know what it’s like and how hot it gets in there!

Jerk: YOU FAG!!!!

Me: Wow! You’re clever. (I think it pissed him off because he was yelling at me, red faced and all, and I wasn’t reacting.)

Jerk: Why don’t you get a job???!!!

Me: I have a job.

Jerk: Well, you better go get a better job!!!!.......

Me: *While walking to the store as he continues to yell at me – and now the wife starts yelling through a window that’s only cracked, so I can’t hear her* Man, you ARE clever! I have a great job. Lock yourself in the hot car!

The jerk continued to yell and my adrenaline was going so I just kept walking to the store. I just don’t understand why people think its okay to lock an animal in the car on a hot day, I don’t care how long. The temperature of a healthy dog is around 101 degrees to start – and THEN you lock the poor thing in a hot car!!!??? Come on!

Another elderly man walked up in the middle of the argument above and when he found me in the store he asked what that was all about. I told him they locked a dog in the car and its 100 degrees outside; he agreed it was way too hot to leave an animal in the car. After chatting with him for a moment I continued with my day as normal, but I can imagine I ruined the Jerk’s day. I always wonder how people tell friends and family stories like the argument above – So, I locked my dog in the car on a 100 degree day and some “FAG” tried to help the dog!!

Like, if you get cut off in traffic and you honk at them and they flip you off. Really? YOU cut ME off and then YOU flip ME off?? Then, what do they tell other people? So, I cut this lady off in traffic and then flipped HER off!
I really don't know how accurate this picture is, but it seems pretty reasonable.

Cloudy, Rainy Summer Day

It's a rainy day, so I'm catching up on posts.

I thought I'd share the recent things I've been hanging on the walls. We bought our house a year ago, I can't believe it's been a whole year!
The picture above is a cute metal envelope I found at Michael's. I used to be able to hang anything, anywhere without even measuring or thinking twice about it. NOW, I don't want to hang anything until I've got a plan, but when I hang something I've been having issues. I was trying to hang a coat hook/shelf thing and only ended up putting a big hole in the wall - the picture below shows what the envelope is covering. OOPS! I told Doug I'd let him hang it (he's thankful :) ), but I fixed the hole, I just haven't painted it yet (I don't think we have touch up paint for that color green).
Our front room has been so boring since we moved in, so last weekend I pulled the rug from the living room and a couple chairs from the dining room table. The chairs don't fit without the extra leaves anyways.
Other photos throughout the house.
Our mantle is cluttered...we still need to have an entertainment center built.
I don't remember if I've posted these shadow boxes I made from our Hawaiian honeymoon adventures.

Dr Scholl's ouchie

I bought a couple pairs of inserts for my shoes and tried them a couple days ago and again yesterday and her are my blisters from them. Below are pictures of the insides of my heels together and then the outside of each heel. Ouchie. They sting still, even after draining the blisters and bandaging them last night. Beauty is pain sometimes. For product and review info, this will be on the product blog also.

Commute Photo

I've seen this truck a couple times. I think all those bags are full of cans on their way to recycling, but it makes me laugh every time. I weave through traffic to get in front of him because I don't think he'll make it under the trees or the street lights/signs that are coming up on this street. Somehow he just barely clears everything.

A Door, of Sorts

Last Friday I spent the day with my mom and grandma; we usually go shopping and have lunch. While we were out I got curtains for our bathroom. We don't have a door from the bedroom to the bathroom and building a door is WAY too much to deal with, so we're giving curtains a whirl. When I got home from work last night Doug already had the hardware up and was just about to hang the curtain, but he was hanging it on the wrong side of the doorway. After realizing we had the same idea of how and were to hang the curtain, but didn't communicate it completely beforehand, Doug took the hardware down and started again - this time from inside the bathroom. We both wanted the curtain to hang inside the bathroom so it wouldn't be seen from the bedroom, but that was lost in translation somehow.
These are the curtains we put over the tub a while back. The window is frosted cubes that look great, but the light shines in the mirror and right into my face while sleeping.

Air Show

Here are some of the photos I took while at work yesterday. We LOVE watching the jets practice from our windows every year. Kristie, Becky and I were on the lookout yesterday and jumping up with cameras in hand while trying to get our work done. As Becky says, "We can't work under these conditions!" It's so hard to work when the jets are whooshing around; we love the sound as the fly by! Our office is moving in a couple months, so we probably won't get to enjoy the air show practice next year.

Home Ghetto Home

Becky came up with the name for this post.
OOPS!!
I cleaned around the sink really well so Doug could re-caulk it. He got under the sink to take the faucet apart and realized it was going to be more work than he expected. He screwed the handle back on and decided to deal with it on another day. Now the faucet was harder to turn on and turning it to hot or cold had to be done before lifting the handle to turn the water on. While washing dishes the other evening I pushed down on the handle and heard a crack. I lifted the handle to see if I could see what cracked inside. While pushing up on the handle the whole thing broke off. Our talk of getting a new faucet is now a must. We have to use a screwdriver to turn it on and then press down on the screw in the middle of the white ring to shut it off. I did figure out if I get a grip around the white ring I can pull it on that way.

Be a Breath of Stale Air

Just over halfway through the book:
Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one’s own sunshine. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Some people are fun to be around. When they enter the room, they’re like the proverbial “breath of fresh air.” Whatever the weather, they’re always happy. If the skies aren’t blue, they see clouds with silver linings. The miserable, on the other hand, choose to look at every bad thing as if it’s happening personally to them. They can always find a way to make things worse. They seem to delight in “throwing a wrench in the works” and “putting a damper on things.” No job is fulfilling, no dance has the right music, and no class is sufficiently entertaining. You wish they’d just keep their mouths closed, because all that comes out is stale air (and they’re all out of Tic Tacs).

Always Want More

Beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. – Luke 12:15, New Testament

Remember that in the end, surely God will be looking only for clean hands, not full ones. – Jeffrey R. Holland

A man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone. – Henry David Thoreau The miserable think that what they have is never enough. Like the Little Mermaid, who owned no fewer than twenty thingamabobs, they say, “But who cares, no big deal, I want more.” (How could you be miserable with twenty thingamabobs?) The miserable say, “If only I had one of those, I’d be happy.” Actually, the more you have, the more you have to worry about – in other words, the more stuff you have, the more the stuff has you! Even Hollywood stars who appear to “have it all” have nothing if they haven’t learned how to be content. The only things we can take with us when we die are our character, our intelligence, and our relationships. Everything else falls apart. Clothes attract moths, cars get rusty, and stuff gets stolen. That’s why Jesus said, “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:20, New Testament).

Fire 49

I have a coworker whose family lost their homes and vehicles in the fires in Auburn. Many people had to leave on foot with only the clothes on their backs. The last count I heard was 50 homes and 10 businesses were lost in the recent fire. At work, we decided to throw together a quick bake sale and we were also taking donations of clothing, water, blankets, etc for the victims of the fire. Bake sales seem to work pretty well in our building and we get repeat customers which is great! They are always so generous!
But we can't have a bake sale without the normal flub. This bake sale was my turn to have a baking mishap. This is what happens when frosted cupcakes get too hot - and THEN what happens when the frosting is all melted and you hit your brakes really hard to avoid an accident. Luckily I had extra frosting and frosted them again when I got to work. Some people thought they were glazed and then frosted, it was pretty funny. After telling a couple gentlemen they melted and were refrosted, one of the guys came up with a name for them: Glazed and Confused.

Silly blogger - The pictures keep flipping sideways.

Our furry friend

This is our feline friend that visits our backyard occasionally. I named her Spreckles. She likes to roll around in the dirt, but sure doesn't like cheese or tuna. What cat doesn't like tuna!!??

We also have a lot of little birds that visit, but they seem to know when I'm going to get my camera.

It's like having our own pets - without having to deal with having pets. Ya know?

Put Deadlines on Your Happiness

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. – Abraham Lincoln

Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.- Jim Rohn Miserable people look for some outside event to make them happy. “As soon as I graduate, I’ll be happy.” After they graduate, they say, “Well, as soon as I get a job, I’ll be happy.” After they get a job, they say, “Okay, as soon as I get married, I’ll be happy.” Miserable people never seem to learn that happiness is a decision, not a destination. It’s an attitude, not an event! If you’re determined to be miserable, then think of life as a waiting room, and happiness as your doctor. You know you’ll be waiting in there forever, so enjoy the magazines. (And when you finally get to see Dr. Happiness, he’ll just tell you to schedule another appointment – and then you’ll be happy.)

Judge Other People’s Motives

Suspicion is the caner of friendship. – Francesco Petrarch

Better to be occasionally cheated than perpetually suspicious. – B.C. ForbesMiserable people are suspicious. If someone’s nice to them, miserable people say, “Hmmmm, I wonder why they did that.” They look sideways at service and think that angels have an angle. Happy people receive the gift and return gratitude, while the miserable are gracious up front, but wonder what’s behind it. Everyone’s a suspect, and favors are fishy. They don’t realize that the good Samaritans of the world aren’t performing acts of kindness because they think they’re on camera – they might actually be good! But if you’re trying to be miserable, be critical of kindness done to you, and believe that everyone has a hidden agenda.

Stay Miserable

I can’t cheer up – I don’t WANT to cheer up. It’s nicer to be miserable!” – Anne of Green Gables

It is difficult to make a man miserable while he feels he is worthy of himself and claims kindred to the great God who made him. – Abraham Lincoln Some people are miserable because, well, maybe they enjoy it. Perhaps it’s easier to be mad at everyone and everything than to look inside and realize that you don’t have to be miserable – or more important, you don’t have to stay miserable. The fact is, when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired, you’ll change. You’ll find that it takes work and effort to stay miserable when there’s so much to be optimistic about in the world. Ignore all that. Forget that you have friends who care about you and that if you were gone, you would be missed. Forget that you have the potential at any moment to make someone else’s day by a smile, a kind word, or a secret act of service. Forget the last time you laughed so hard that milk came out of your nose….

Hey, are you beginning to smile? There’s nothing funny about wasting your dairy products. You have a lot to learn about being miserable. Never mind, turn the page.

Company Party

After the BBQ on Saturday, when Doug got home, we headed out to another River Cats game. We haven't spent time with his parents for a while, so we invited them along. It was a great game, but really difficult to mingle with my friends/coworkers and their friends and family. Not to mention at the beginning of the game I had a little boy behind me going crazy and a woman next to me leaning on me. The boy and his family left, so the woman and man next to me moved back a seat, then it was smooth sailing.
Dinger throwing stuff from the roof.
They WON!
More fireworks! I LOVE FIREWORKS!!
There were people hanging out in the building across the way, what a great view of the fireworks! (They are in the top level of the building just under the fireworks in the picture above.)
Random photo I took for my sister in law, Debbie. She LOVES those MULLETS!!
This was a weird Phoenix thing across the field. I think it was to promote a bank?

I have to say how rude people are though; we were trying to introduce our friends and family to each other and a guy threw a wrapper at my coworker. REALLY?? Did you really need to throw something. If you give us a moment we'll say our hellos and sit down. Sheesh!

It was so great to spend time with Doug's parents, we don't get to see them terribly often. We even had dinner with them on Sunday. They put up with us TWO days in a row :)

I really like haning out with my coworkers/friends. They are a crazy bunch of folks; even more crazy outside of work.

Company BBQ

Friday, I got an email that my previous employer was having a BBQ on Saturday (I love those guys!). So, on Saturday I headed over to one of the their homes for some BBQ, music, games, and catching up.
Bounce house, trampoline and pool - the kids seemed to enjoy the pool the most since it was 100+ degrees on Saturday.
The band - I forget their name.
Hitting golf balls down the hill for the adults.

It was so great to hang out with everyone again. It was a great break in my normal Saturday schedule I seem to have.
